Art Workshop helps people grow through circumstances

COOS BAY - Using art as a way to express their emotions and grow through circumstances, a group of unconventional artists learn a little about themselves and each other.

On Thursday, local artist Bittin Duggan, who runs an art workshop program "Growing Through It," brought some of her students from the SHAMA House to Black Market Gourmet for the monthly Artwalk, to show off what they created.

KCBY first told you about Duggan's program last April, which helps people who walk "outside the norm" learn to express themselves and gain self confidence through art.

"I've been doing this for 15 years across the country. It's really about the students individually, doing their own growth work through art. It helps them to see that they aren't that different and that they are good at something. I love supporting people who aren't artists express themselves," says Duggan.

She has also been working with some students at the Destinations Academy at Harding Learning Center, and says she has seen some real growth in many of the kids.

"Some of those students really realized how much they love painting which is great. It improves their self-confidence and it gives them something they enjoy to their everyday lives."

Duggan says she has a few more workshops lined up with local groups within the coming months.
