This art piece was created by nine members of the Ohio Head Injury Support Group, Toledo Chapter at The Ability Center of Greater Toledo. The composition directly portrays one group's experience of life after sustaining traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The surface is covered with copies of the participants writings about their lives today, since the changing effects of brain damage. Each participant personally challenged themselves to express their life experience since injury. I am touched by their strength and honesty. Take the time to read the actual art piece or read the originals in the accompanying book. All copies were applied smoothly with the exception of one piece that left a shelf like ledge. This "accident" became opportunity for possibility (An attitude that helps one gain peace and acceptance after damaging the brain) which you will discover later.
The next phase was to determine the images that would symbolize the group experience so they could paint a meaningful composition. The group went through a series of progressively changing symbols and images. After much debate, discussion and feeling; simplicity was the victor. The spiraling rainbow could hold meaning and power for all participants. Significant words were generated to include the full spectrum of reality after brain injury. The spiral is center around the fundamental core issue - LIFE. The ten most important components of this group's LIFE include the following: LOVE, FAMILY, FRIENDS, NOURISHMENT, HEALTH, PETS, PLAY, SHELTER, REHABILITATION, and BODY, MIND, SPIRIT. Many other words and feeling were written throughout the rainbow's spiraling colors: trauma, anxiety, determination, survival, acceptance, self-esteem, empowerment, identity, awareness, empathy, apathy, paranoia, stress, celebration, loss, depression, sadness, discontent, spirituality, chaos, change, thriving, frustration, struggle, rage, anger, and hope.
